The Monk Seal Island
Alonnisos, is one of the first islands in the Aegean to be inhabited, as indicated by Neolithic settlement remnants found at Cape of Kokkinokastro. Alonnisos Island rises from the sea like a mountain of greenery with thick stands of pine and oak, along with mastic and arbutus bushes and fruit tree; which make the island ideal for those who want to enjoy leisure walks. Visitors have the opportunity to get involved in alternative activities in the island’s scenic natural environment all around the year.
It was here that Argo, the ship of Jason and the Argonauts sailed to Kolhida to retrieve the Golden Fleece and the ships of Achaeans to Troy. Numerous shipwrecks of classic and Byzantine times confirm the naval power of the island. Alonnisos hosts the National Marine Park, a refuge of the protected sea turtle species Monachus Monachus which lives in the caves of the island. The NM Park is also refuge of rare seabirds and dolphins. The island of Alonnisos is surrounded by 8 uninhabited islets, rich in flora and fauna which form the core of the Marine Park.
